Event Summary

Honolulu Biennial, the international contemporary art exhibition that brings together artists from Hawaiʻi, the Pacific, Asia and the Americas, begins March 8 – May 5, 2019 at over ten locations throughout Honolulu.

To Make Wrong / Right/ Now draws energies from across the Pacific Ocean to connect indigenous perspectives, knowledge and creative expressions from Asia, the Pacific and the Americas. The public program expands on the curatorial approach through diverse strands of public programming that encourage play, creativity and critical dialogue.

The HUB, Center Stage located at 1200 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, HI. (the old Famous Footwear Space) will be hosting the majority of over 90 public programs with some events happening at other locations around the city.

Come explore contemporary art connected by the Pacific with over 47 artists and arts collectives and enjoy over 90 public programs within 7 different strands inspired by art-making workshops, panel discussions, presentations, talks, dance performances, films, fashion shows, and live music.

More Details

1. MAKER / MISCHIEVOUS
In this program series, local and visiting artists create interactive playful spaces to make, share and practice with community. This strand of programming will be comprised of workshops, demonstrations and maker-spaces generated to make / wrong / right / now and offer fun, silly and saucy endeavors for HBF audiences.

2. STORY / TELL
A series of artist-full talks, intellectual excitement, engaging community panels, silly symposiums, and story-full telling. This strand of the public programme will connect HBF audiences to an array of local and global practitioners, thought leaders, place makers, organizations, and enterprises as they engage in “glocal” conversations of our time.

3. PAU / HANA MEDLEY
This performance series is composed of live entertainment, soul-full rhythms and mind-full movements featuring more than twenty local and visiting musicians, dancers and performance artists of various backgrounds and influences.

4. REEL / NIGHTS
Film-full screenings, shorts, watch + talks showcasing Hawai'i-based films and subjects. The selection of films will stir a proverbial pot of emotions and understandings as its transports audiences through different island perspectives.

5. RIGHT / NOW POP-UPS
Off-the-cuff curated experiences, shenanigans and peculiar pop-ups will take life at various locations around Honolulu to punctuate this impromptu series.

6. UMEKE / UMBRELLA
This series invites events produced by community and organizations outside of HB19’s curated offerings and highlights local endeavors, talent, and topics in an array of locations across Honolulu.

7. KEIKI / KINE
For HB19, Art Explorium offers a series of keiki-friendly workshops inspired by the work of HB19 artists to encourage each child’s natural curiosity and delight. In a fun art space with an array of materials, children are given freedom to create something with their own hands, while the artist process cultivates foundational life skills for its participants.

Free entry to the Hub for those attending public events, but RSVP is required. Guests may enter starting 20 minutes prior to the event.
